If you have recently installed MATLAB and have never ran Simulink before, I believe it could be a problem with you license file.  Make sure to go back to software.caltech.edu and go back to the page where you downloaded MATLAB (in My Software) and follow the instructions on updating your network.lic file in the Matlab source folder.
