iGEM is an annual competition in which teams of undergraduates conceive, design, construct and characterize synthetic biological systems. Almost 200 teams from around the world are expected to participate. Caltech students can participate in iGEM as a (team-based) SURF project. A number of activities are available to iGEM team members in the winter and spring terms to help get up to speed on the state of the art in synthetic biology, select a project for the competition, and get up to speed on experimental and modeling skills in molecular biology. No prior experience is required. A key goal of this year's team will be to produce publication quality research and present the results at both the regional and international iGEM jamborees (in Oct and Nov 2012).
For students who are interested in participating in the 2012 International Genetically Engineered Machines (iGEM) competition, we will have an information session on 17 Nov (Thu) at 12 pm in 105 Annenberg. Lunch will be available starting at 11:55.

How to participate
- Come to the information session on 17 Nov to get more information about iGEM and Team Caltech
- If you want to receive additional information about iGEM, sign up for the igem-interest mailing list
- Fill out and turn in an interest sheet: due 30 Nov (Wed) at 5 pm to Richard Murray (109 Steele - leave in box outside the door)
- Team selection will be done from 7-9 December; anticipate 8-10 SURF slots
- Meetings to brainstorm topics (and write SURF proposals) in Jan-Feb 2012
