Self- regulation, regulation through feedback and feedforward loops, and nested combinations of these mechanisms all appear regularly in natural systems. Through simulation and analytical work, the student will explore why feedback patterns are ubiquitous in gene expression networks, how combined feedback and feedforward loops function, and how feedback makes genetic networks robust to changing environmental conditions. Pre-requisities: ACM 95b or equivalent differential equations class, CDS 110 or 101 useful but not required. No biological background necessary.
