Safe and Robust Perception-Based Control
Machine learning provides a promising path to distill information from high dimensional sensors like cameras -- a fact that often serves as motivation for merging learning with control. This talk aims to provide rigorous guarantees for systems with such learned perception components in closed-loop. Our approach is comprised of characterizing uncertainty in perception and then designing a robust controller to account for these errors. We use a framework which handles uncertainties in an explicit way, allowing us to provide performance guarantees and illustrate how trade-offs arise from limitations of the training data. Throughout, I will motivate this work with the example of autonomous vehicles, including both simulated experiments and an implementation on a 1/10 scale autonomous car. Joint work with Aurelia Guy, Nikolai Matni, Ben Recht, Rohan Sinha, and Vickie Ye.

Reinforcement Learning for Constrained and Multi-Objective Markov Decision Processes
We consider the problem of optimization and learning for constrained and multi-objective Markov decision processes, for both discounted rewards and expected average rewards. We formulate the problems as zero-sum games where one player (the agent) solves a Markov decision problem and its opponent solves a bandit optimization problem, which we here call Markov-Bandit games. We extend $Q$-learning to solve Markov-Bandit games and show that our new $Q$-learning algorithms converge to the optimal solutions of the zero-sum Markov-Bandit games, and hence converge to the optimal solutions of the constrained and multi-objective Markov decision problems. We provide a numerical example where we calculate the optimal policies and show by simulations that the algorithm converges to the calculated optimal policies. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time learning algorithms guarantee convergence to optimal stationary policies for the constrained MDP problem with discounted and expected average rewards, respectively.

=== Abstract ===
A network-based approach to design and analysis of connected vehicles
Sergei Avedisov
U. Michigan

In the future vehicles may use dedicated short range communication (DSRC) to communicate with multiple surrounding vehicles and infrastructure including those beyond the line of sight. The resulting ad-hoc connected vehicle network (CVN) has the potential to improve traffic safety, traffic mobility, and fuel economy. We develop mathematical models to design and analyze CVNs which must take into account for nonlinearities, complex network structure, delays, digital effects, as well as other challenging phenomena that play a crucial role in traffic dynamics. We exploit the network structure to analyze complex CVNs effectively, and gain some nontrivial yet important insight in CVN design.
