Back to [[Summer 2007 Murray Group Trip]]

=== Packing Considerations ===
We have baggage requirements for the Catalina Express and the Safari (aka HomeyG) Bus. The following is from the Catalina Express website:
"Each passenger is allowed 2 pieces of luggage, no larger than 21×24x36 and weighing no more than 70 pounds each, to be stowed in the luggage compartment. In addition, each passenger may bring one carry-on that fits under airline style seating. Flammables or dangerous items are not allowed." [http://www.catalinaexpress.com/termsConditions.php]

However, since Sawyer and I are taking care of packing food, tents, and some other group items, we'd like to ask everyone to only have 1 piece of luggage, that includes your sleeping bag and pad, and 1 carry-on. We suggest a duffel bag for your sleeping bag and pad, clothes, and personal items, and a day pack/bookbag for your carry-on.

From the Weather Channel, the outlook for next week is highs in the upper 70's to low 80's, lows in the low 60's, no chance of rain, and sunny skies.

=== Packing List ===

* day pack
* hiking shoes or boots and socks (sneakers will probably be fine)
* swimsuit(s)
* towel(s) (there are showers available at the campsite)
* flip-flops for beach/showers
* toiletries- toothbrush/paste, sunscreen, bug spray, etc.
* necessary medications (including anti-seasick if you get seasick on boats)
* water bottles (fresh water is available at the campsite)
* 3 days of clothing and underwear, including wind protection and warmth for the evenings
* hat for the sun
* lazy afternoon reading material
* flashlight/super cool headlamp with fresh batteries
* sleeping bag & pad (unless we're bringing one for you)
* small first aid kit
* money for lunch/dinner/entertainment in Avalon on Friday
* Plate/bowl, cup, and utensils (Mary says it's okay to bring tupperware :^P)
* shirt for surfing (optional- preferably not cotton)
* snorkel gear (optional- can rent individually from Wet Spot Rentals on Catalina for $10/day by calling 310-510-2229)
* camera (optional)
* games (optional- for around campfire)
* sunglasses (optional)

For additional ideas, check out Mary's backpacking packing list, [[Packing List]], though not all items are necessary for this trip.

=== Group Items ===
Stuff we're planning on bringing (let us know if you think we forgot something):
* large cooler/ice chest
* large pot(s)
* large frying pan
* camp stove
* coffee pot, filters, coffee (Richard)
* Serving/mixing spoons/spatula
* Cleaning materials
* Pot holders
* plastic baggies for lunch, trash bags
* Food for 2 breakfasts, lunches, and dinners (veggie & meat)
* Snacks and beverages
* Toilet paper
* Tents

John will coordinate the group breakfasts, lunches, and snacks to help save on the trip cost. We will plan to bring two breakfasts and three lunchs. For dinners there is a local cafe where we can apparently get pizza and other food items. The following items are suggested for breakfast, lunch, and snacks. Please let John know if you want anything added to this list

*Breakfasts: bagels, cream cheese, butter, orange juice, oatmeal (variety of flavors)
*Lunches: sandwiches (wheat bread, pita, salami/cold cuts, cheese, lettuce, tomatos, mustard, peanut butter, jelly), lemonade, apples, bananas, carrots (peeled)
*Snacks: Granola bars, trail mix, apples, bananas, cookies, lemonade, dark chocolate! (and some milk chocolate too...), oh and Skittles for Richard.

There is supposed to be an eating area at Curry Village with a toaster and microwave, so we will hopefully be able to warm the bagels...

'''Monday:''' Design Example ({{cds101 handouts|L10-1_dfan.pdf|Notes}}, [http://www.cds.caltech.edu/~murray/courses/cds101/fa06/mp3/27Nov06.mp3 MP3])

This lecture will talk about the process of robust design, using the Caltech ducted fan as a case study.

'''Wednesday:''' Robust Performance ({{cds101 handouts|L10-2_robperf_h.pdf|Slides}}, [http://www.cds.caltech.edu/~murray/courses/cds101/fa06/mp3/29Nov06.mp3 MP3])

In this lecture we will discuss how to model uncertainty in control systems. We will focus on the inclusion of unmodeled dynamics in our system descriptions, allow us to reason about the performance of a system even when the dynamics are not exactly known.

The exam will consist of 3-5 problems, covering all of the the material in the course. The exam will be open book. You may use the course notes, any of the optional texts (Friedland, Franklin-Powell and Emami-Naeni, Leonard and Levin, Strogatz, or Kuo), course handouts, lecture notes, course problem sets and solutions, and your own handwritten notes. ''No other books are allowed.''

You may use a computer or calculator for carrying out numerical computations. MATLAB may be used but is not required. You are not allowed to use the Internet during the exam except for accessing local computing resources, such as MATLAB/SIMULINK or accessing copies of presentations, notes, FAQs, or other material posted on the course web site. You are not allowed to access or print out contents of other sites for use while taking the exam (although you can take handwritten notes on the sites and use your own notes in the exam).

The exam will be due by 5 p.m. on riday, 8 December, in the box outside 102 Steele. Please write your solutions in a fresh exam book (blue book). We have to grade a large collections of exams in a short time and it makes things much simpler to manage if everyone uses a bluebook.
