=== Course Description ===
Students will formulate and implement an engineering project desired to explore a biological principle or property that is exhibited in nature. Students will work in small teams in which they build a hardware platform that is motivated by a biological example in which a given approach or architecture is used to implement a given behavior. Alternatively, the team will construct new experimental instruments in order to test for the presence of an engineering principle in a biological system. Example topics include bio-inspired control of motion (from bacteria to insects), processing of sensory information (molecules to neurons), and robustness/fault-tolerance. Each project will involve proposing a specific mechanism to be explored, designing an engineering system that can be used to demonstrate and evaluate the mechanism, and building a computer-controlled, electro-mechanical system in the lab that implements or characterizes the proposed mechanism, behavior or architecture.

The current prevailing approach for certifying the correctness of the behavior of autonomous vehicles is to simulate or test drive the vehicle for millions of miles. This bottom-up approach is not only inefficient and impractical, but it also means manufacturers cannot provide formal guarantees for critical behavioral specifications like safety.

We have proposed a top-down approach for designing the behavioral specifications of an autonomous vehicle. In particular, we have designed an assume-guarantee paradigm under which each vehicle is assumed to act according to some behavioral profile. Under the assumptions that all cars are operating according to these specific profiles, the car can guarantee it will behave according to its own behavioral profile. Each behavioral profile has specific mathematical properties that function to order the importance of all desired behavioral specifications in an autonomous vehicle.

[[File:slide.png|500px|center]]

With each car acting according to this type of behavioral profile, we can begin to guarantee certain behavioral specifications of each car.
The objectives of this project would be to:
1. Prove and/or simulate the collective behavior that emerges when each car is acting according to behavioral specifications in all different road network configurations and initial conditions.
2. Reduce the algorithmic complexity for resolving games with multiple agents so that it scales well.
3. Show the differences (advantages and disadvantages) between thinking of all cars collectively (assume-guarantee profiles) vs. as individual entities.
Note, we have already constructed a simulation environment to run and test algorithms, so familiarity with the following topics would be of great help:
- Python
- Game theory
- Dynamic Programming and Optimization
Neural-inspired sparse sensing for classification and control
Thomas Mohren, U. Washington

Sparse sensor placement is a central challenge in the efficient characterization of complex systems when the cost of acquiring and processing data is high. Leading sparse sensing methods typically exploit either spatial or temporal correlations, but rarely both. We use sparse sensor optimization in combination with neural-inspired sensory encoding to leverage the spatiotemporal coherence exhibited by many biological systems. Using flying insects as a model, we subject flapping plate with embedded strain gauges to inertial rotation. We show that nonlinear filtering in time is essential to detect rotation, whereas instantaneous measurements fail. My current project aims to understand how animals overcome temporal challenges such as sensory delays and time varying control effectiveness during locomotion. Using the inverted pendulum as a benchmark model, I study the effectiveness of timing-based controllers in dealing with these challenges.

Reinforcement Learning for Constrained and Multi-Objective Markov Decision Processes
Ather Gattami, PhD
Wednesday, February 20, 11am
Annenberg 243
We consider the problem of optimization and learning for constrained and multi-objective Markov decision processes, for both discounted rewards and expected average rewards. We formulate the problems as zero-sum games where one player (the agent) solves a Markov decision problem and its opponent solves a bandit optimization problem, which we here call Markov-Bandit games. We extend $Q$-learning to solve Markov-Bandit games and show that our new $Q$-learning algorithms converge to the optimal solutions of the zero-sum Markov-Bandit games, and hence converge to the optimal solutions of the constrained and multi-objective Markov decision problems. We provide a numerical example where we calculate the optimal policies and show by simulations that the algorithm converges to the calculated optimal policies. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time learning algorithms guarantee convergence to optimal stationary policies for the constrained MDP problem with discounted and expected average rewards, respectively.
